Little Beaver’s Bend winds its way through Soaring Eagle Waterpark at a leisurely pace that lets your worries gently slip away. While the kids are catching big water on FlowRider, or dropping down our slides, Little Beaver’s Bend is where you’ll find most Moms and Dads.
As you float around the west side, you’ll see both of our slides empty into the river so you can see all of the action.
Here’s another park secret: as you float around Little Beaver’s Bend, look up! Around the top of the park, you’ll see the clan symbols of The Tribe, for their meaning look at the doors around the park. The Waterpark and Hotel’s Matriarch, Nokomis (Grandmother), is our resident storyteller. Each night, Nokomis will share traditional stories of her youth in the Tribe that have been passed down through oral traditions that are still observed to this day. Yes, these stories are authentic and come from the elders of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe and are voiced by a Tribal Elder. Nokomis is attired in a dance dress, called a Jingle Dress that was created specifically for her by elders of the tribe, her hair and hands are modeled from a Tribal Elder and she holds an authentic dance stick. As you spend time with Nokomis you will see that every stitch and every item were sewn and created by members of the tribe in accord with Tribal tradition. Fun fact: A new dress for Nokomis is currently being created, however, tradition dictates that only one jingle per day may be added to a dress. Keeping with tradition, it takes some time to create a new outfit. (By the way, dresses such as this and the brightly colored clothing worn by traditional Tribal dancers, such as seen in photos in the hotel pool, are known as regalia.)
You’ll be amazed watching the kids try to figure out if she’s real and they will come away with an introduction to Native Culture. All of us who work at the park consider Nokomis a part of the family and will wish her good morning or say hello as we walk past.
